Words Count-Free Literacy program for families in Greater Hartford

Words Count is a short-term, parent-directed, play based program that builds creativity and caregiver-child bonds. The program is based on research showing that the number of words a child hears by age 3 can have a significant impact on his or her future academic success. Research that tells us that by age three, children growing up in poor neighborhoods or from lower-income families may hear up to 30 million fewer words than their more privileged counterparts. Back and Forth Exchanges Boost Children’s Brain Response to Language

Anne Trafton MIT News  — A landmark 1995 study found that children from higher-income families hear about 30 million more words during their first 3 years of life than children from lower-income families. This “30-million-word gap” correlates with significant differences in tests of vocabulary, language development, and reading comprehension. Massachusetts Institute of Technology cognitive scientists have now found that conversation between an adult and a child appears to change the child’s brain, and that this back-and-forth conversation is actually more critical to language development than the word gap. Draft 16-17 SPP/APR available for review

December 27, 2017

This is a link to the final draft of the combined State Performance Plan / Annual Performance Report.   It is a very long document, best viewed online.  As usual, Connecticut continues to do very well on both the compliance and results indicators. The APR is due to the US Department of Education’s Office of Special Education Programs by February 1, 2018.  For more information about the SPP, click here.  Indicator (11), also known as the SSIP will be completed for an April 1, 2018 submission.
